Let’s Get Active in Lawrencetown
For the fifth year in a row Lawrencetown Community Development Group will be running a fantastic series of health and well-being initiatives, classes and talks. This year like the rest of the world will see a move to some online programmes too.
Starting the 11th January and running for 8 weeks it is a much-anticipated event. Currently the group are finalising the programme but it is ramping up to be another bumper year with some nice new additions to the line-up. There will be monthly events running after the initial 8 weeks also to allow the community to keep active throughout the year!
The usual walking and running programmes will be available suiting all fitness levels from beginners to advance levels. Groups include a Buggy Brigade, Walkers and Talkers, Men On The Move, Couch to 5km and interval running.
Some of the most popular events from the last few years are making a comeback with hurling skills for children, women’s and men’s soccer skills, golfing, an active retirement day out, kids soccer tournament and a family climb day out. One of last year’s highlights was the community cycle (Thanks to Ballinasloe Cycling Club and Barry’s Cycle for brilliant guidance and advice) which saw a fantastic local group going from couch to 50km in a matter of weeks which was an amazing achievement. Cycling will be extended in 2021 to a 10 week “Axa Community Cycle” programme with various distance loops to suit all.
2021 newbies include on-line classes re spinning, kettlebells, mindfulness, nutrition and some at home work outs. A Lawrencetown Heritage Trail Walk and a “Potential” Greenway Route Trail walk will get the walking shoes out. Also a fun “Honk the Horn” Bingo will be held at the end of January to get those number lovers out and about!!
This year the spotlight will be on our fantastic new walking track which is located at the back of the school in the village and with that and the MUGA pitch combined they are the perfect base for our activities. With this in mind we have decided to launch a competition for anyone in the area to enter – all you have to do is create a DIY fairyhouse – that we can pop along the walking track & you will be in with a chance of winning a host of prizes with the top three winners getting to choose from hotel vouchers, family dinners or a one for all voucher. Closing date is the 1st March 2021.
All events and activities will be following all the current guidelines in relation to Covid19 and will be adhering to social distancing. We will be inviting participants to register in advance for ALL activities.
